Baertschi and Smith out, Butler returns.

Yesterday in practice Sven Baertschi was injured with what the Flames are describing as a lower body injury. It is not a severe injury, but he will be extremely doubtful for tomorrow’s game against the Avalanche. Perhaps this is a good opportunity for him to rest a little more and view the game from upstairs while not demotivating him by having him play 5-8 min on the 4th line or being benched without an excuse. With this, either Begin or Jackman will draw back in on the 4th line.

Bob Hartley has decided to sit Derek Smith in order to get Butler some game action again. Hartley wants to create a rotation to allow for competition between the defense in order to keep them all giving an honest effort every game. Another wrinkle that is on the horizon is the return of Anton Babchuk who should be ready in about a week. It’ll be interesting to see what they do with The Anton once he returns. Might not be a bad idea to see if he might be usable in a 12th forward/7th defenseman position to try and utilize his shot during the game. Perhaps using him as our version of Marc Andre Bergeron, where he gets PP time with Wideman, but only a couple minutes here and there when not on the PP.

In other news, Airdrie native Zach Boychuk was placed on waivers by Carolina. In 37 games in the AHL he has 32 points, but hasn’t been able to get things to click in the NHL thus far. Maybe worth looking at from the Flames point of view. At worst he’d be an effective player for the Heat.
