After a seven game winning streak, the Flames have lost their last two games. Now as they get ready to play their final game before Christmas, they are once again in a must win situation. Heading into the break on a three game losing streak would deflate all the momentum built up from the winning streak. They also have fallen back into a three way tie with the Oilers and Coyotes for fourth in the Pacific Division. The winning streak only eliminated the terrible start by the Flames. It did not make the Flames a playoff team, or a playoff contender. The insanity of the first few months is in the books. All the teams in the Pacific except Los Angeles are starting from scratch. The next 49 games will determine their fate.

Winnipeg has had difficulties after a hot start to the season. They have a record of 8-13-1 since the start of November and lost their game yesterday against the Edmonton Oilers. Since Ondrej Pavelec has been sidelined with injury, the Jets have turned to rookie Connor Hellebuyck as their saviour. He has played well, posting a 5-3 record with a 2.41 GAA and .916 sv%, leading the team in each category. However, in his last five starts, he has surrendered 15 goals and was pulled last night against Edmonton after surrendering three goals on fourteen shots.

Tonight’s game begins a stretch of 22 games, extending to February 15th, that will see the Flames play mostly against teams on the bottom half of the standings. This is the stretch that could allow the Flames to build a lead on the other teams in the Pacific division. The way the need to play to be successful is through consistent performances from all player in the games. On the road trip, the Flames struggled through the first 5 minutes of each game and were terrible for most of the second period in Detroit on Sunday. Calgary has the potential to tie their franchise record for longest home winning streak tonight if they collect a win. We will see if they can do it tonight when the puck drops at 7 PM.
